Home to over 140,000 residents, Alexandria is known as an "independent City in the Commonwealth of Virginia". Just 6 miles south of Washington DC, Alexandria is nestled up against the Potomac River and many professionals of DC live in Alexandria.
Alexandria is known for its historic town center and prides itself on local shops, boutiques and restaurants. This area of town draws many tourists as it's easy to walk from place to place.
There are several neighborhoods in Alexandria and each holds their own charm and nostalgia.
Old Town – Located on the Potomac River at the southeastern corner of town is the oldest part of the city aptly named Old Town. This historic district is full of beautiful homes, art galleries and historical landmarks. The Market Square in Old town is one of the oldest operating marketplaces in the US.
Rosemont – Located to the west of Old Town is Rosemont. While there are many historical landmarks and buildings here , this area is closing integrated with the heart of Alexandria. These are great neighborhoods with charm and close community.
The Berg – To the north of town is the mainly African American community called The Berg. Many of these historical homes are named after famous musicians, song-writers and religious figures.
Alandria – To the north-eastern is the combination name from Alexandria and Arlington. There are many ethnic restaurants, shops and districts in this diverse and culturally explosive community. If you are looking to be in the center of culture and excitement this is a great neighborhood to consider living.
Del Ray – To the north west of Old Town is the community of Del Ray. This neighborhood draws thousands of people from around the Washington, D.C. region during its annual Art on the Avenue main street festival the first Saturday in October. New development under way in formerly unused land near Potomac Yard, across US Route 1 from Del Ray, will include condominiums, offices, parks, and a fire station with affordable housing on upper floors.
West End – Annexed from Fairfax County in 1950 this typically suburban part of Alexandria offers pockets of darling homes, cul de sacs and beautiful buildings. This large area of Alexandria also has its own subdivisions including Seminary Hill, Lower Alexandria, Landmark and Seminary West. Each area offer neighborhoods and schools for families and those looking for a little slower pace lifestyle in the heart of the US.
Northridge – This industry driven community in Alexandria are sub-areas including Beverly Hills, Jefferson Park, Braddock Heights, Timber Branch, Park Fairfax, Monticello Park, Beverly Estates, and Oak Crest. It is a residential area with homes of numerous styles with mostly single family two-story and basement houses that were largely developed in the period of the 1930s through the early 1960s.
